‘Twas the Week Before Christmas..

And guess what? I’m still not done with everything. Shocking, I know. Somewhere between decking the halls and avoiding a second helping of holiday cookies (or not), we realized we’ve been hermits lately. But venturing out during the holidays is tricky—most families are swamped or battling seasonal sniffles.

Also, a quick apology for skipping the last vlog. Thanksgiving night turned into an unexpected trip to the ER for my wife (she’s fine now, thankfully!). But the whole ordeal knocked us off schedule with our planned holiday cheer. Will we catch up before New Year’s? Eh, maybe.

A Manor House, a Christkindlmarkt, and a Budget Reality Check

In the spirit of the season, we visited our local Manor House, decked out for Christmas. The best part? It was free! Free events are like Christmas miracles for us budget-conscious folks.

We also made it back to the Carmel Christkindlmarkt this year. While entry was free, the food and shopping weren’t exactly wallet-friendly—thanks, inflation! Still, they’ve got a scavenger hunt, a kids’ area, and those glorious outdoor heaters that keep you from turning into a popsicle. We filmed a little video for our YouTube channel, Unlearn and Eat Travel, if you want to check it out. (Yes, shameless plug—don’t judge!)

Walking, Budgeting, and Lost Library Books

Lately, I’ve embraced the fine art of winter walking. It’s free, it’s outdoors, and it’s great for burning off holiday stress—self-imposed or otherwise. (Now, if only I could find that overdue library book that’s threatening to wreck my free activity streak…)

If you’re on the hunt for budget-friendly holiday outings, check your local parents’ magazine or event calendars. Parades of lights, caroling, or festive small towns are often free or low-cost. Got a zoo membership? Many zoos include a visit to their holiday lights event in the membership price.

For those of you who get a live tree each year, consider finding a tree farm with holiday extras—like Salisbury Tree Farm, which has the best cookies. Seriously, don’t leave without them. Oh, and here’s a photo our 10-year-old took there this year.

Looking Ahead to the New Year

Have you started thinking about next year yet? I’ve been scoping out the metroparks and library calendars for January. Weather permitting, we’re planning to get the most out of our zoo and science center memberships before playground season kicks off. (Because we love a good playground!)

Got a favorite playground we should visit? Let me know! We’ve got a tent and a sense of adventure, so we’re always game for a road trip.

A Little Holiday Pep Talk

Take a deep breath. You’ve made it through this year—congrats! Give yourself a pat on the back for homeschooling (or unschooling, or just keeping it together). Next year’s a blank slate, ready for new adventures.

From our family to yours, happy holidays and cheers to the new year ahead!
