Spring has sprung! What’s in your basket to do?

Are you hopping down any rabbit holes with your learning? (Ha!) We are gearing up to enjoy the last few crowd-free months at the zoo and museum before summer hits. Our science center membership expired, and I’m not sure when we’ll renew it—maybe in the fall, unless we take a trip where it’ll come in handy.

Honestly, this winter felt like pure hibernation for us. We didn’t get out much, which can be both a blessing and a curse when homeschooling. More time inside means more iPad time for the kiddo, and pulling him away from that can be tricky. The upside? He’s really leaning into self-directed learning. Right now, he’s deep in a culinary phase, and if I wasn’t trying to lose weight, we’d be making a lot more of the dishes he’s excited about. Most of them look amazing, but let’s be honest—some of them look like the chef had the munchies when they came up with the recipe.

We’re also noticing all the new life popping up in the woods behind our house. The mushrooms have been especially interesting. I keep reminding him not to disturb a fungus among us that we know nothing about. And, of course, this is the perfect time for endless mushroom jokes.

Do you have any cool science experiments planned for spring? Planting a garden? We’re making lots of woodland observations, and for some reason, I have this urge to sit by the dam and watch the walleye fishermen—but only on a warm day.

We’re also gearing up for my 50th birthday cruise! Stretching the shoestring budget for it, but hey, you only turn 50 once. One of the highlights will be visiting some Mayan ruins and learning about the ancient Mayan way of life. I recently discovered that some homeschoolers do group cruises once or twice a year. There’s even a group cruising to Japan! Who knew? Would that be something your family would be interested in?

As for the rest of the year, I’m both excited and a little nervous. We’ve got several mom camps and learning opportunities lined up, assuming all goes well. Hopefully, your family is getting out and enjoying the warmer weather too. From our family to yours, stay safe this spring storm season and take advantage of all the free programs that help enrich your homeschool journey!
